Pledge to Protect Our Future: Parliamentarians United Against AMR

We’re calling on members of national legislatures who are not part of Government or the executive branch to lead the global fight against AMR through political leadership, evidence‑based policymaking, and coordinated, collaborative action.

A global problem calls for global leadership

AMR is responsible for an estimated 1.27 million deaths annually and contributed to 4.95 million deaths globally in 2019. Without urgent action, projections suggest AMR could cause up to 10 million deaths per year by 2050.

The economic toll is equally alarming. The World Bank further estimates GDP losses of US$1–3.4 trillion per year by 2030 if AMR is not addressed—a scale comparable to the 2008 global financial crisis.

Sign the Charter, commit to real change

By signing this Charter, I commit to using my position as a member of a national legislature to help drive political action in response to AMR.

As a member of the Global Parliament vs AMR Initiative, I pledge to:

  • Establish, join, or strengthen an existing group within my national legislature focused on AMR — such as a cross‑party caucus, committee, or informal working group — and use this platform to advance AMR‑related scrutiny, advocacy, and policy development.
  • Champion science-informed, evidence-based policymaking that reflects national realities and global consensus, and is guided by the lived experience of healthcare workers, constituents, and local stakeholders—through active consultation and inclusive engagement
  • Regularly raise AMR in legislative sessions through questions, debates, motions, or equivalent parliamentary procedures.
  • Constructively engage with relevant executive leaders, government departments, and stakeholders to support stronger AMR policies, funding, and oversight — while, where necessary, holding them to account and urging further action.
  • Promote transparency, accountability, and multisectoral coordination in the implementation of the AMR National Action Plan.
  • Ensure integration of AMR into wider policy and programme areas — including human health (such as reproductive health and communicable diseases), environmental protection, animal welfare, and food systems — so that AMR is embedded across national and global policy frameworks.
  • Participate in global and regional AMR dialogues, including high-level meetings, study visits, and peer learning exchanges to advance AMR response.

Signature

I hereby sign this Charter and affirm my commitment to the Global Parliament vs AMR Initiative.
